The suicide prevention program, Life Care, has been successful in reducing risk factors for suicide in the industry since 2006. Life Care aims to provide training sessions and preventative education to all first year Victorian building and construction apprentices about a range of issues affecting young workers.
This program aims to prevent suicide amongst young people in the building and construction industry. The program raises awareness of suicide and its risk factors and promotes positive life skills to support apprentices with the daily challenges of work and life.
The program was recently recognised by the State Government as making an outstanding contribution in the areas of health prevention and promotion at the 2009 Victorian Premier's Public Healthcare Awards where it won a Silver Award.
Incolink is delivering the Life Care program throughout Victoria and is offering this important training to all first year Construction Industry Apprentices and in association with the generous support from Cbus Superannuation and the Federal Government Department of Health and Ageing.
Now available in metropolitan TAFEs and group training venues as well as in regional centres, the Program was expanded to include metal trades, further broadening its reach in the industry. During the year the Department of Health and Ageing confirmed its commitment to funding the initiative for a further two years.
